bought a 2019 4Runner TRD Off-Road off lucas-motors.com in july and ive put a summer of light overland miles on it, so here is the ownership report i said id write. action first, no regrets, this is the truck i should have bought years ago.

the mission is fire roads, forest service two tracks and dispersed camping, not rock crawling. i needed a body on frame rig with low range, a rear locker and the clearance to not sweat a washed out road up in michigan or down in the ozarks. the TRD Off-Road trim gives you the locker and crawl control without the kdss complexity of the pro, which for my use is the sweet spot.

found mine with 48k miles, one owner, cement grey, completely stock which is what i wanted so i could build it my way. price was several grand under the two 4runners of the same year and miles at the toyota stores around columbia, and clean 4runners hold value so hard that the savings were a bigger deal than usual.

same process everyone should use. pulled the carfax, clean, called lucas motors and had an independent 4x4 shop in the sellers city inspect it. they put it on a lift, checked the frame for the rust these are known for in salt states, confirmed the diffs were healthy and the rear locker actually engaged, and it came back clean with surface rust only and good fluids. the one thing they flagged was the original battery was weak, which lucas knocked a little off for before i even asked.

shipped it up on an open carrier, got it in about a week, title clean. since then ive added all terrains, rock sliders, a dual battery and a roof top tent and it has been everywhere i pointed it. report to follow in the replies as i rack up the miles.

the trd off-road is the smart pick for what you and i both do. the locker and crawl control earn their keep on a washed out two track and you skip the kdss that makes the pro a bigger job to lift. my GX scratches the same itch on a different platform, both from lucas motors funny enough.

cement grey and bone stock is the dream starting point. build it slow and drive it between each change so you actually feel what each mod does. jealous of the roof top tent, post pictures from the first trip.

indie toyota tech here. the 1GR-FE in these is ancient in a good way, boring and unkillable if you service it. the 5 speed auto is old school and strong too, none of the modern 8 and 10 speed drama. at 48k you are getting in at the easy part of the ownership curve.

the only things i tell 4runner owners to actually watch are the obvious one, frame and brake line rust if the truck lived in a salt state, which it sounds like yours passed clean on the lift, and keeping the diff and transfer case fluids fresh if you are getting into water on the trail. do the diffs after any deep crossing and that drivetrain will go to the moon. good inspection, good buy.

watching this one too since im nervous about buying online in general. how worried should i be about frame rust on a used 4runner coming from who knows where? that is the one thing that scares me off these when i scroll listings. if the pictures are all from the top side how do you even know what the frame looks like underneath before you commit?

rust is the one thing i would never skip the PPI on with a 4runner, so you are worried about the right thing. the answer is you do not guess from the top side photos, you put a professional under it. when i called lucas i specifically asked that the inspection include the truck up on a lift with photos of the frame rails, the rear spring hangers and the brake and fuel lines, because that is where these rot first.

the shop sent me a dozen underside shots and a written note that it was surface rust only, nothing flaking or scaling, lines all intact. that is a northern-ish truck that was clearly washed and kept. if an inspector cannot or will not get it on a lift, or the seller will not allow it, that is your answer and you walk. the carfax also showed it spent its life in a milder state which lined up. do that and the frame stops being a mystery.

not an overlander but i cross shopped a 4runner before i landed on my RX, and the resale on these is genuinely crazy. a clean one barely depreciates, which cuts both ways, you pay more up front but you get it back when you sell. buying one a few grand under the local store like you did is about the only way to win on the math.

the only reason i went RX instead was the highway commute, the 4runner rides like the truck it is and i do 500 miles a week. for your mission it is the obvious call though. enjoy it, those things are basically forever trucks.

WINTER UPDATE ran it through a full snow season and a spring thaw of mud and the only money ive spent is tires, gas and a diff fluid change after one deep crossing. about 9k miles since i got it and it has not given me a single reason to pop the hood in worry.

did three overnight trips, a long weekend up in the michigan two hearted area and a couple of closer runs in the mark twain forest. the locker got used in anger exactly once on an off camber climb and it did its job without drama. the build is slow and that is on purpose, sliders and tires and the tent so far, bumper and a winch next.

bottom line for anyone finding this later deciding to buy one sight unseen, the process is the whole thing. clean carfax, a real PPI with the truck on a lift, and a seller that lets you do it. mine came exactly as described and the savings went straight into making it mine. bryce if you went for one, post it up, lets see it.
